Jashemski 1972 excavation

According to Wilhelmina, in 1971 and 1972 she made subsoil excavations in the large area at the rear of the shop which had living quarters above, which had originally been excavated in 1958-9, and discovered that it was an informally planted garden.

128 cavities were found.

11 cavities had a largest dimension of 30cm or more, and were obviously those of trees.

5 others with the largest dimensions ranging from 22 to 29 cm, also appeared to be those of trees.

The larger trees (over 30cm) with one exception, were all planted along the edges of the garden.

The planting pattern was not precise, but the roots tended to be laid out in irregular rows running both north-south and east-west. 16 cavities and probably many more were those of tree roots, and there were many of vine roots.

Two unplanted areas furnished outdoor living space: one at the rear of the garden, the other under the east wall near the cistern and the dolia.

The generous space at the rear, near a crudely built niche in the west wall, was shaded by 3 trees.

Objects found there were various fragments of pottery, including 2 of terra sigillata, one a small dish with the potter’s stamp NI:CO(stratus) and part of a bowl (preserved length 6.3cm). There were broken perfume bottles, a loom weight, a badly corroded small coin, a broken lamp decorated with the head of a cupid with hair dressed in a topknot, and a fragment of a very small dish with one handle (3.5cm in dia) of a type that has been classified both as a doll dish and as a votive.

The original excavators found the following objects in this area: an iron tripod for cooking, a dish of terra sigillata, 3 terracotta lamps (one only 6.5cm in length), a small bronze container, a small tweezers, a conical shaped alabaster container, a glass perfume bottle, and 3 lead weights.

The 16 bones and 3 teeth that we found were probably the remains of meals eaten in the garden.

On the path leading to this area we found a beautiful bronze hair ornament (preserved length 10cm) with a delicately etched head of a bird at one end, 4 badly corroded coins, and near the edge of the path a tiny lamp (preserved length 5cm) such as those used as both toys and votives, and a whetstone (11cm long).

The open space under the east wall served as a work space in the vicinity of the dolia and the cistern.  Near the cistern the original excavators found the following bronze objects: a large situla (bucket), a large, long handled pan, a funnel, a small amphora, a small bell, a small tweezers, 8 small fish hooks (2cm long).  In addition, there was a terracotta urceus with the label,

GA(rum) SCOMBR(i) SCAVRI/EX OFFICINA SCAVRI.

The large phallus (37cm high) carved in Sarno limestone, painted red, and inserted on the west end of the outside of the north wall gave protection from evil.

The broken amphoras inserted in the top of this wall protected the garden from thieves.

According to Wilhelmina, “The generous space at the rear, near a crudely built niche in the west wall, was shaded by 3 trees.

A path led from the door of the shop, between two irrigation channels, to an open area at the rear of the garden, near a crudely built triangular niche in the west wall.

Most of our small finds came from this path or the open area.

On the path we found a beautiful bronze hair ornament delicately etched with the head of a bird at the end, also four coins, a tiny lamp such as were used both as toys and as votive offerings to the gods, and a very useable whetstone.

The crudely built niche had perhaps held a lamp. The three trees nearby would have made this area very pleasant.

We found many objects in this area, perfume bottles, a loom weight, a coin, a broken lamp decorated with the head of a cupid with hair dressed in a top-knot, fragments of various dishes, also a part of a very small dish with a handle, either a child’s toy or a votive offering.

The original excavators likewise also found significant objects in this area.”

According to Wilhelmina, “the 8 dolia embedded in the garden and perhaps the one embedded in the rear shop would have been used for fermenting the must”.
