VI.15.8 Pompeii. December 2007. Oecus on the south-east corner of portico. According to Sogliano in NdS, this room was either a triclinium or an oecus. It had walls painted with decorations partitioned with the usual architectural motifs, on a white background. The dado was purple. He said the decoration wanted to be rich and vibrant, but in reality it was bungled, heavy and vulgar. He thought it made a sad impression as if one was in a catacomb. Originally it would have contained three central paintings, but only two remained, as the third fell together with the south wall. On the north wall was Perseus and Andromeda. On the east wall, Sogliano thought the painting showed Helen and Paris in Sparta. See Notizie degli Scavi, January 1897, (p.36-7)
