VII.14.5 Pompeii. March 2009. Doorway to room 12.

This was the only room in the house in which three paintings were found, but they were described as “nearly vanished” even in 1875.

They were mythological paintings, amongst which only Theseus and Ariadne, and Io and Argo, were recorded.

VII.14.5 Pompeii. Drawing by Giuseppe Abbate, 1842, of painting showing Theseus and Ariadne.
This painting was left in situ in room 12 and has now completely disappeared.

VII.14.5 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 12. South wall.

VII.14.5 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 12, south wall.

The wall appears to show a colourless zoccolo, which was divided into three by red stripes: in the middle red zone it seems to show a central aedicola between two panels: the upper zone was painted white.

According to Fiorelli,

(trans. "On the opposite side of the walkway, going down to the left from the atrium, there are three family rooms: the first decorated with three paintings, faded and nearly vanished, in which were recognized the remains of a representation of Theseus, which for the last time gazed at Ariadne asleep, and that of Io and Argo, in the usual attitude of the foot resting on the stone: the second had three paintings with fish and landscape; the third shows in the walls various painted birds, and an earthenware pan in which some foodstuffs seemed to have been placed.

Between the two last rooms, you find the entrance to the kitchen......... "

VII.14.5 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 13, south wall with remaining painted plaster.
The wall would have been painted in the IV Style, with red panels framed by “carpet” borders and two parallel lines.
The borders would have been separated by architectural decoration which showed, according to Fiorelli, three paintings with fish and landscape.
No trace of these paintings survives on the south wall.
