IX.3.5 Pompeii. March 2009. Room 14, north wall, with window with view over garden area.
According to Breton, the painting near a large window opening onto the xystus remained in its place. It represented Bacchus, winner of India erecting a trophaeon, surrounded by Bacchantes holding the thyrsus, shields and drums. A captive with chained hands was sitting at the front . The upper part as well as on the right-hand side have now disappeared, and one cannot see more than Bacchus and one of his followers.
See Breton, Ernest. 1870. Pompeia, Guide de visite a Pompei, 3rd ed. Paris, Guerin.
