Vicolo della Regina, Pompeii. Drawing by Mazois, looking west to junction with Vicolo dei Dodici Dei.
According to Mazois – this fountain was decorated with the head of a bull; but what made it remarkable was the iron balustrade which surrounded it at the side of the sidewalk to stop anyone falling into the basin.
The iron bars, already almost destroyed by rust during their discovery, could not resist for long the atmosphere of the air, they have disappeared, however there are still fragments embedded into the stone.

Fountain at VIII.2.29. Between 1819 and 1832, drawing by W. Gell of the fountain in Vicolo della Regina.
The relief head is shown additionally in the top left of the drawing.
