IX.13.1-3 Pompeii, 1973. Strange mark in original soil level in the middle of the garden, lying between the trees. Then Stanley realised that what they had uncovered was the outline of step-ladder. It was an exceptionally long and narrow ladder, exactly the same size, the workers told Wilhelmina, as the light wooden ladders used to pick cherries and pears today. Photo by Stanley A. Jashemski.
